1. Are simulation exams required?

Vendor certifications such as Microsoft's MCP, MCSE, MCSD, MCDBA; Cisco's  CCNA, CCDA, CCNP, CCIE; CompTIA's A plus, network plus, I-net plus; Oracle's DBA and other certification exams are becoming increasingly accepted as a means of establishing the competence of an individual in related professional fields. Vendor certifications have become essential, keeping in view the pace of the technology enhancements and developments. Prospective employers usually prefer a certified professional when available. The practice tests are useful to check one's  preparedness to take the actual certification. That means, it should be taken during the preparation for the exam and after the preparation but obviously before taking the certification exam. Usually, many people find it tough to pass the exams first time due to reasons ranging from unfamiliarity to take computer based certification exam to improper final preparation. Practice tests cater to this requirement and enhance the understanding of the subject.

2. What are the requirements need to be met?

Practice tests though not exactly simulating the actual exam environment, should have preferably the following attributes

1. Comply to the stated objectives of the respective vendor certification.
2. Questions should be reasonably tough that one can expect similar (tough) questions in the actual exam.
3. Practice exams questions should enhance one's overall understanding of the subject by providing detailed explanations when required.
4. Should be form based with features like

a) Timer

b) Exhibit selection to display graphic image or large text

c) Explanations

d) Large number of question database, usually close to 200

e) Written by experienced and certified professionals.

5. It is also important to restrict the number of questions to a limited size, that the test taker should not be inundated by similar questions that do not carry any new information.

3. How much to pay for simulation exams?

Practice tests are not the sole preparation tools. These tests, however, complement  other learning methods. These should be reasonably priced, simple but serve the purpose.
